USA Visa for Medical Treatment: US Medical Visa

If an applicant is visiting the United Sates for medical reasons (undergo a medical treatment or visit a medical facility) a B-2 visa will be issued.

B2 Visa Qualifications for Medical Treatment

The applicants applying for B2 visa need to fulfill certain requirements. The U.S. consular officer taking the interview decides if the applicant is eligible to enter the United States or not. It is a presumption that every visitor visa applicant is an intending immigrant who has an intention to stay back in the U.S. permanently. Applicants for US visitor visa must overcome this presumption by demonstrating that:

  • The purpose of their trip is to visit U.S. for medical reasons.
  • That they plan to remain for a specific and limited period.
  • Evidence of funds to cover expenses in the United States.
  • Evidence of compelling social and economic ties to their home country. They should prove that they have a residence outside United States as well as other social and economic binding ties that will ensure their return back to their home country

Required Documents for the Interview

There are a number of documents required for the interview. Sort the documents in an organized and orderly manner so you don't struggle to find them while giving the interview. The documents required by the applicant are:

  • A valid passport that does not expire prior to 6 months of your intended stay
  • US Visa Application Fee receipt. Visit US Visa Fees for more details
  • Printout of your confirmation page from the US Visa Application form DS-160
  • One Photograph
  • US Visa Appointment Letter

In addition to the standard visitor visa requirements, you need to bring the following information about your medical treatment:

  • A diagnosis from a doctor about your medical condition. The doctor's statement should explain why you need to visit U.S. for medical treatment.
  • A letter from a doctor or hospital in the United States stating the following:
    • Willingness to treat your medical condition.
    • Estimate of the costs of the treatment, including costs associated with hospitalization, doctor's fees, and other such medical expenses.
    • Approximate length of stay in US for the treatment.
  • Proof that you (or your sponsor) have sufficient funds to pay for your travel and medical expenses in the United States. The financial proof can be in the form of bank account statements, property owned and other such proofs

Note: Individuals suffering certain afflictions like contagious diseases may be ineligible to get their visitor visa approved according to the United States Immigration and Nationality Act. Under such circumstances the person seeking medical treatment can apply, but approval of the B-2 visa is not assured

Where to Apply for the Visitor Visa?

Applicants for visitor visas or B-2 visa should generally apply to the American Embassy or Consulate that has jurisdiction over their place of permanent residence. Although visa applicants may apply at any U.S. consular office abroad, it may be more difficult to qualify for the visa outside the country of permanent residence.

Visa Denial or Refusal

Your visa can be delayed under 221 (g) and denied under 214 (b). If the application is delayed the applicant needs to provide additional information as per the request of the visa officer. If the visa officer denies the visa then the applicant may apply again if the applicant feels that his or her circumstances have changed.
